What is a Family Health Coach?
This is a common question I get asked! The term is fairly new and it’s likely that you are not clear on what a health coach does. A health coach helps others achieve their health and wellness goals by providing science-based, trusted information, positive encouragement and continued motivation. More specifically, a FAMILY health coach educates both parents and children about what nutrients the body needs to grow, develop, and flourish. Most parents know that their kids need to eat healthy and exercise, but few feel that they have the knowledge and understanding of how to incorporate these changes into their daily lives.
As a Certified Family Health Coach, I promote eating well as a family. How many times have you been following a restrictive diet and ended up cooking one meal for you and then an alternative meal for your family? Maybe you have meal prepped and planned out a week’s worth of healthy dinners and lunches for yourself, but the kids end up with frozen chicken nuggets. Most restrictive diets end up failing because they take the pleasure out of eating. The solution is to stop dieting and start eating whole nourishing food without needing to count anything. The problem is that most of us are not sure where to begin. Most fad diets focus on the quantity of the foods we eat when we should be focused on the quality.
When you start to focus on the way your entire family eats and lives, you can implement lasting habits for both your children and yourself. Instead of teaching them to follow a restrictive diet, you can teach them how listen to their own hunger cues and make better choices even when you’re not around. In order to effectively impact the health of a child, change needs to begin at home with the parents and caregivers. Often struggles with learning, behavior, performance, weight or overall health can be positively impacted through with healthy food and exercise.
